Larry Chiang is crazy yet brilliant.  The first thing he did when he stopped by MIT Sloan the other day was tell us his phone number and say that we could control him remotely by calling and texting him.  Of course, he did this to prove a point - how many of us would take advantage of that opportunity when it was spoon fed to us? He stressed the value of combining MBA smarts with practical, street smarts, including 1) hosting events and 2) being media to get media.

1) Host an event, throw a Minimum Viable Party

The idea of a minimum viable party is to become used to hosting events.  It is one of the most important things that you can do to help your career.  This idea is supported by Keith Ferrazzi's book Never Eat Alone.  Larry says, instead of hosting a two hour party, invite people to a hotel to meet each other then move on to another venue.  It's simple, easy and low cost.

2) Be media to get media - the Minimum Viable Blog Post

3 paragraphs, 12 sentences, 2 pictures, 1 focus.  That's all you really need in a blog post.  Blogging is overwhelming because we don't know how long a post should be.  Keep it short, focused and add a couple pictures and you've got blog post in 15 minutes.  Also, guest post when you can, it's a great way to get your message out there and bloggers are happy to have passionate people writing for them.
